The RDS is a deriviate from the T16 just as the RDH. But where the RDH uses a rather complicated horizontal staff, the RDS can (in theory) be used with any staff such as a leveling staff. Originally it came with a special staff however which could be adjusted in such a way that the 1 m mark was at exactly the same height as the instrument. I bought an RDS from the US without the staff but could not resist buying this one when it came up with the staff (and a tripod) in Belgium. The original RDS was then sold back to Belgium restoring the balance of RDS's in Belgium. As the staff is the rare part I was rather pleased to have the combination. The RDS uses distance lines that are mechanically geared with the vertical circle as can be seen in the images.
